I'm afraid this is not the case. The tray icon is a common spec between Gnome, KDE, XFCE and others. It even works on windows given the proper Gtk libraries. So there is a clear usage outside of Gnome 3. (Btw. there are still a lot of people on Gnome 2 as well.) >From the link you posted it sounds to me that Gnome 3 doesn't have a tray anyway, without a replacement interface for tray icons like they used to be on Gnome 2. So you can just disable this plugin. (Btw. on Ubuntu Unity tray icons still exist, but with a new API, zim already supports this. If there is a similar replacement on Gnome 3 please file a feature request for supporting it.)
