I can confirm this with an usb stick, and a self built 3.2-rc4 with CONFIG_DVB_DYNAMIC_MINORS=y. Makedev needs to get the minor numbers from sysfs if this option is set or refuse to create the nodes at all. In the help to this config option, udev is listed as requirement for this option, so makedev should not be needed: config DVB_DYNAMIC_MINORS bool "Dynamic DVB minor allocation" help If you say Y here, the DVB subsystem will use dynamic minor allocation for any device that uses the DVB major number. This means that you can have more than 4 of a single type of device (like demuxes and frontends) per adapter, but udev will be required to manage the device nodes.
