I should add I was only able to rollback to my last good version by purging
the new packages and then reinstalling the packages below; dpkg --install on
those packages did not restore the system.
After restoring the X server no longer freezes but there are major rendering
errors with fgfs (package flightgear, make the package unusable) and some
minor rendering errors for /usr/lib/xscreensaver/endgame.
