OK, further into this thread https://mailman.uni-konstanz.de/pipermail/basex-talk/2011-November/002324.html we see that if a more real life example file was used, also on the man page, one wouldn't have to research how to get output... One could say "just Google for the answers". However often one just finds how to do it in other implementations of Xquery, not the basex implementation.
