I was experiencing the same problem after upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze. Plymouth was not used before, so the package was not upgraded before. I noticed the problem must be related to some random race condition or something, as the problem didn't always happen, but some/most of the time only. Interestingly, the problem seems to disappear as soon as I purged console-tools, console-data and console-common which seems to solve the problem.
