ioctl VT_GETSTATE: Invalid argument (not a linux console?) So, mailcap should not attempt to run them in such a case (where another tool could be used, like pdftotext for PDF). A test like test=test -z "$DISPLAY" -a "x$TERM" = xlinux solves this problem.
