Wheezy kernel modesetting bug. I found a workaround for this bug and I am now convinced the bug has nothing to do with modesetting. It is rather a bug that is caused by a failure of the kernel to turn on the back light of the laptop (Acer Aspire 7715z). The workarounds: a) use acpi_osi=Linux as a kernel parameter and press Fn + Left Arrow to turn the back light on when it is incorrectly turned off by the kernel. b) use the command as root: setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 The above command can be included in a startup script.
