The strange thing is that this class of issue has always been present AFAIK, it seems that it just takes a very particular confluence of circumstances (involving heavy load, bad luck etc) before anything goes wrong, although it does seem that if a particular setup is susceptible it will see it quite a lot. DRDB's use of sendpage is pretty recent (I think) which is why you only just started seeing it.
