According to http://www.open-mpi.org/faq/?category=building#build-rte-sge it's enough to configure openmpi with the --with-sge parameter. I have added --with-sge to debian/rules and rebuilt the package and I can confirm that ompi_info now indeed reports that gridengine support is available.
