Package: ganglia-monitor
Severity: important
Version: 3.1.7-1+b1
On a system where network-manager is installed (it is installed by
default on Debian), the network is not configured until a user has
logged in to X windows.
This means that the attempt to start gmond during boot fails:
Aug 19 18:24:03 myhost /usr/sbin/gmond[2036]: Error creating multicast
server mcast_join=239.2.11.71 port=8649 mcast_if=NULL family='inet4'.
Exiting.#012
There are various workarounds:
- remove network-manager so that DHCP happens earlier
- have at least one interface not managed by network-manager, so that
DHCP happens earlier
- configure gmond not to use multicast
However, it would be nice for gmond to work out of the box as widely as
possible. Although it was originally intended for monitoring servers in
a cluster (where network-manager is unlikely to be present), it is now
widely used for everything from monitoring laptop batteries to
monitoring unused CPU cycles on user desktops (where there is an
opportunity for CPU scavenging)
