This problem seems to occure when you are using Empathy without installng the whole GNOME (i.e. when using KDE)
Problem is properly discribed here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-850280-start-0.html The solution for debian was to install gstreamer0.10-gconf package.
