It should be possible to retrieve the upgrade history of the kernel with a command like zgrep -F 'status installed linux-image-2.6.' /var/log/dpkg.log* |less though it might not extend back too far. Anyway, have you been tracking the squeeze kernel since then or some other repository like sid? Could you name an early-ish version (like "2.6.32-28" or "2.6.38-5", something like that) that you're confident worked? I ask because such information would be very helpful for getting an idea of what happened if it happens again.
