-classic used to be the default implementation; some time ago, it was forked into a -experimental implementation which wasn't experimental in nature but added support for mixing the experimental dist in your sources.list (cherry-picking build-deps from experimental as needed). For all functional purposes, the -experimental version should be better than the -classic one.
