The zip deflation format is specified in P. Deutsch, DEFLATE Compressed Data Format Specification version 1.3, <ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc1951.txt>, Internet RFC 1951 (May 1996).
There is no in-notes/ directory on ftp://ftp.isi.edu/, so the links yield 550 errors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GZIP#File_format has working links to these RFC-s. These have the non-marginal extra benefit of using HTTP rather than FTP.
