p7zip is the Unix port of 7-Zip, a file archiver that archives with very high compression ratios.
I very much doubt that 7-Zip archives with particularly high compression ratios. For me, the particularity of 7-Zip is to handle the "7z" file format, which allows very high compression ratios, and perhaps in general the number of archive/compressed file formats it supports.
