The lack of UTF-8 input and the lack of UTF-8 display are part of the same UTF-8 support problems. Upstream knows about these and tried to get them into the last upstream release but did not. I'm still holding my breath for them. I will ping JED again to make sure that he knows that we're all anxiously awaiting this set of features. This is, to say the last, very frustrating. If anyone else would like to like to take a stab at writing this patch.
