I don't use Windows, luckily!    ;-)
I have never plugged my USB HSDPA modem into a Windows box.

Would it be a useful test, if I tried to purge usb-modeswitch and then
plug the modem again to see if /dev/ttyUSB0 shows up (and what other
interfaces are exposed)?
