I presume one of the other dependencies depends on the virtual package libjpeg-dev. This is no longer provided by libjpeg62-dev (as of version 6b1-2) and libjpeg8-dev does not contain /usr/lib/libjpeg.la on a number of architectures, including i386 and amd64.
