Hi, gaia fetches images from http://wms.jpl.nasa.gov/wms.cgi (see lib/wwfetch/wwfetch_image.c). However this service is no longer available, retrieving the URL by hand shows This server no longer provides full WMS services! This is also mentioned on the main web page: This server no longer provides full WMS services for any of the datasets. Furthermore, the MODIS daily mosaics are no longer being updated. The tiled WMS access, described in the Tiled WMS and Google Earth KML support will stay operational. -- http://wms.jpl.nasa.gov/ Maybe "tiled WMS access" could be used?
