This isn't a valid version; it's really a lot nicer when you use
report bug so that version numbers are correct and the dependency
information is included....

This isn't particularly useful, I'm afraid.

Can you run e2fsck (fsck.ext2 is just a link to e2fsck) by hand?  What
does e2fsck print before it core dumps?

Are you sure the e2fsck binary or any of its shared libraries haven't
been corrupted?
