(while I was experiencing the problem described in this bug) That was it. cd /etc/rcS.d mv S04udev s04udev Then rebooting and loading the drivers works incredibly well. Dammit. udev 0.068-2 hotplug 0.0.20040329-25 (both latest versions in unstable, IIRC)
