I was trying to do a selective upgrade last weekend, and got hit by what
sounds exactly like this bug. It messed up both the available and the
status file. I keep a nice automated backup system running, so I restored
those two files from the last backup. Tried the upgrade again. Same
result. All this is with running apt-get from the command line; I haven't
tried upgrading by any other means to see if the results are different.
Let me know everything I should capture and send along, and I'll try it
again this weekend. My system has been freshly rebooted this week (a
rarity; my uptimes typically are many months) due to a failed UPS battery
followed quickly by a power glitch. So I'll be curious to see if it
still goes down the same way.
