I've fixed the unused-but-set-variable warning in my Git repository;
the fix will be included in the next mdk package upload, hopefully
within a couple of days.  Thanks for pointing this out!

Incidentally, mdk does not really build with -Werror by default, but
only if there is a "werror" in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS; is that so in your
setup, or are your build analyzers reacting to the presence of warnings
and the "-Werror" string in the rules file or something? :)
