I note that gnome-games depends on:
gnuchess | hoichess | bbchess | crafty | fruit
Is it possible that you have gnome-games installed and apt is trying to
satisfy those dependencies?
Perhaps if you remove gnome-games as well, you wont find a new chess
package coming back.
