Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-30 Severity: important Tags: squeeze I tried to load uvesafb in order to get frame buffer support for the native 1024x600 resolution of my JVC MP-XP731 laptop. So I added uvesafb to '/etc/initramfs-tools/modules' and ran 'update-initramfs -u `uname -r`'. Then I configured the graphics mode in the grub2 configuration (setting GRUB_GFXMODE="1024x600,800x600,640x400" and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=keep as well adding some lines in /etc/grub.d/00_header that evaluate these variables). While grub2 runs fine in the native 1024x600 resolution now, the kernel messages on boot time have disappeared. The system seems to be running and responding to keyboard input, i.e. I can blindly log in and restart my laptop. It looks like the Kernel prints messages to the text console being invisible because the graphics card stays in graphics mode.
Interestingly, if I wait some time in grub before booting, or after restarting the system several times, it suddenly starts working: The system boots normally into a graphical command line as intended. However, I get the following error(s) from uvesafb: [ 2.703725] uvesafb: Intel Corporation, Intel(r)852MG/852MGE/855MG/855MGE Graphics Controller, Hardware Version 0.0, OEM: Intel(r)852MG/852MGE/855MG/855MGE Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS, VBE v3.0 [ 2.736775] uvesafb: VBIOS/hardware doesn't support DDC transfers [ 2.736780] uvesafb: no monitor limits have been set, default refresh rate will be used [ 2.737005] uvesafb: scrolling: redraw [ 2.737013] uvesafb: cannot reserve video memory at 0xf0000000 [ 2.737484] uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -5 -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.32-5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-30) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Wed Jan 12 04:01:41 UTC 2011 ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-686 root=/dev/mapper/vg_jvchd-lv_root ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [ 59.420478] lib80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'TKIP' [ 64.260239] apm: BIOS not found.
