ubuntu found a workaround and probably the reason for the bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/259219 LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 ipython works around the problem. thus lower severity is now fine with me.
