Then it turns out to be a bug in Mozilla (mozilla-browser 2:1.7.8-1).
I can make it work by ticking `Allow documents to use other fonts' in
the Preferences dialogue box. When it's not working, that dialogue
box looks like this:
Fonts for: Western |v|
Typeface Size (pixels)
[...]
Monospace: monospace |v| 13 |v|
Minimum font size 14 |v|
[ ] Allow documents to use other fonts
Display resolution: 72 dpi |v|
