Yeah, it has nothing to do with resizing. The problem is that you
need a newer e2fsprogs than what is shipping with Debian stable if you
want to use the newer kernel. And I've held off on getting a newer
version of e2fsprogs into testing because I need to backport some
fixes into the very stale version of e2fsprogs 1.41.12 that has been
frozen during the stablization period for Sqeeze.
There is a version of e2fsprogs 1.41.14 in experimental which you can
use.
