It seems to depend on the link. For the following link, middle mouse button to open new tab does not work in 1.0.4-2sarge2 (but works well with 1.0.4-2): <a href="/usr/share/doc/mozilla-firefox/"><font size="+1">docs</font></a> Left mouse button to open in same tab does work in both versions.
