Hello Justin,

You are right, the descriptions were not clear enough as they should be. I 
just fixed'em in svn and probably the new one will be uploaded soon.

To answer your question: the -byte suffixed versions are obviously the 
bytecode ones (as opposide to native compiled ones) which are interpreted and 
hence slower than the native ones. We have native and bytecode versions on 
alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 powerpc sparc architectures and for the rest 
just the bytecode ones. As I see you are using x86 hence you want ara and/or 
xara-gtk packages since they run faster that their bytecode counterparts.
