the bug this was said to be forwarded to (freedesktop's 25412) claims to be resolved in debian bug #595776. that bug is claimed to be resolved since xorg-server-1.7.7.6, while this bug here just occurred again on my box with 1.7.7-11 (after not showing up at all in late 2010).
