Hi,
The package description for binutils-gold states, in part,
It currently fails to link some
applications and libraries (i.e. won't link usable kernels).
I think that "i.e." should be changed to "e.g.", since its inability
to link usable kernels seems to be an example of how it fails rather
than a restatement of what it fails to do.
