-m stretch does more than that; it scales the whole image to fit the screen. I imagine that this will look good with some images but not with others, which makes it kind of awkward that we didn't have -m stretch in there to begin with since it's hard for me to say which images will deal well with this. Do you have any way to analyse the existing set of widely-deployed background images?
