I tested this bug using the sample file that Daniel Kahn Gillmor provided. OpenOffice.org-Writer did not have any trouble opening the file. There was nothing on the file though.
When opened in MS Word 2007, it gives you an error saying that the document was created using a pre-release version of MS and is not compatible. This was tested on OpenOffice.org-Writer 1:2.4.1.
