No, it's really "directory". It's the same "directory" parameter that
-b gets (i.e. the unpacked source tree).

A suggestion for an improved wording is most welcome.

Same requirement than -b in general since those options are only sort of
"hooks" that should be called before/after -b (but not immediately
before/after so it can't be done in -b itself).
