Thanks for your report, and patch. I can see how it fixes the case with openmpi, but not lam (current mpi default on several arches) or mpich2 (future mpi default on those arches)... So I installed binutils-gold, and tried out a few things. In addition to requiring some other MPI libraries, the ptscotch linking line also requires -lscotch. It looks like it all works now, I've pushed the fix to alioth and am doing a final build or two to upload.
