Hi,I can confirm this bug as well. In my case, it seems that it actually tries to set the WEP key, but it clears it after very short time (I have noticed it while issuing 'iwconfig wlan0' periodically). Configuring essid + key manually solves the problem.
I use ath9k_htc driver, kernel 2.6.32-25-generic, wpasupplicant-0.6.9-3ubuntu3
