The daemon gets hung reading from a socket for a dead or
dying interface/address for 'checkip.dyndns.com' ('checkip.dyndns.org'
is a CNAME record for 'checkip.dyndns.com'), which has two A records:
204.13.248.70 and 91.198.22.70. For some reason, the resolver always
returns the second address, which has begun hanging just recently:

checkip.dyndns.com port 80
I, like the original poster, have been using ddclient for a long
time, with the checkip.dyndns.org as the IP checking service. I became
aware of this problem after seeing the message log spam from timeouts:
