The KDE system monitor shows only pulsaudio running. However:
The best is: 'ps aux | grep puls'
r...@transponder:/home/garydale# /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop
Stopping PulseAudio DaemonNo process in pidfile '/var/run/pulse/pid'
found running; none killed.

Similarly, killing the process using either killall pulseaudio, kill
<process #> or killing it using the system monitor fails to prevent
it from restarting with a new PID.
See attached screen shot of the mixer.
Your default device is SB analog but "S/PDIF Default" is enabled. Try
to mute that control and test sound again.

Actually, S/PDIF is off. The S/PDIF Default is set to PCM but that
shouldn't matter so long as S/PDIF is off. I'm not sure how to change it
since it doesn't seem to respond to the various keys that I've tried
that work on the other controls.
