If you wouldn't it wouldn't get that far. Could you run libvirtd on the
remote lenny box like (as root):

        LIBVIRT_DEBUG=1 libvirtd

and see if there's something in the log output? Look for something like 

        "libVir=%p, type=%s, typeVer=%p"
