The binary packages that you generate cannot be rebuilt if the files you
download vanish (be it the mirror going offline, or the files being
removed from the Debian archive altogether), even though all
build-dependencies are satisfied. This way, Debian would distribute
binaries without sources... how can this be right?

 The scripts used to extract the files are the actual source.

You should wait for multiarch or contribute in this direction, rather
than hack something to work around current known limitations.
