In my case, however, being able to override it (with ugly and error-prone
tricks :) actually avoided a minor disaster.

Note also that the force option already allows you to run against the
wrong disk in many cases. Even without the force option, too.

Of course, this is truly not urgent in any way, as I know how to work
around.
