Package: dpkg Version: 1.15.8.4 Severity: normal I've patched a package and rebuilt it as documented on
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-pkg_basics.en.html#s-sourcebuild i.e. with "dch -l local ..." before the build itself. But dpkg regards the local package as older than the official package: $ dpkg --compare-versions '1.2.3-2+b1' le '1.2.3-2local1' zsh: exit 1 dpkg --compare-versions '1.2.3-2+b1' le '1.2.3-2local1' and both apt-get and aptitude want to upgrade the local version. Either the sorting algorithm should be fixed or the FAQ should describe a way so that local versions still have the precedence over binary-only updates based on the same version. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=POSIX, LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1 (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages dpkg depends on: ii coreutils 8.5-1 GNU core utilities ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.5-4 high-quality block-sorting file co ii libc6 2.11.2-2 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libselinux1 2.0.96-1 SELinux runtime shared libraries ii xz-utils 4.999.9beta+20100810-1 XZ-format compression utilities ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime dpkg recommends no packages.
