More than 1 year ago, I did setup a project on Alioth for a future package named iso-codes-utils which would serve that purpose. I think it would be better to either keep this separated from iso-codes...or at the minimum as a binary package provided by the iso-codes source package (the original iso-codes package being then renamed "iso-codes-data" or something similar). The iso-codes-utils project is nearly dead, mostly because I hadn't time up to now to revive it...and also because I knew these *.tab files would go away at some moment and we first needed the XML DTD's probably. Typically the localechooser package build scripts use such data from iso-codes to build lists of countries AND their translations. So, the best example is for instance to grab the localechooser source package and look there for the "mktemplates.country" and "mk_shortlist_templates" scripts.
