The problem was caused by Edwin choking at the Xft font customisation for Emacs in my .Xdefaults. Adding `edwin*font: fixed' fixed it for me.
As far as I am concerned this bug could be closed (in any case it's not Debian-specific and the upstream knows about it already), although it would be nice to have a better error message -- without Taylor R.
