It seems the ppp package is to old. I had the same problem. After installing 2.4.5-4 from unstable, I was able to log in.
I have (well, technically had) the same problem with my Verizon/Novatel USB modem until installing 2.4.5-4 per the above quoted comment.
This seems leads me to believe that this is all a duplicate of bug 590087. Nevertheless, I am working again.
