I see the tray icon with a message, "your kerberos ticket is expired" in my fedora system. I can just click on the tray icon and get a ticket, which all kerberos enabled applications can then use. I like this behavior, but it is not the default option in debian. I support adding this option as default in debian as well. It works as a handy "kinit" gui.
