My apologies for the noise. It turns out that a config change made some years ago (swapping the mythtv and messagebus groups for compat over nfs) only had an impact now. I'd failed to change the gid in /etc/passwd from 104 to 134 (the gid of the messagebus group). It probably broke with the 1.2 upgrade because, as you speculate, you only then added the helper and it's dependence on having the right gid. Thanks again for your help.
