What exactly you suggest to do. Quite frankly, this italics text makes things clear enough. Italics text is used across text consistently for this kind of context. Do you really think this is too confusing? Do you have particular fix in mind which is consistent with rest of this document? For me putting annoying text around to explain such things destruct understanding. This type of italics use are quite common in manpage too. Paul, Do you have something in mind? If this is such a problem, we need to rewrite all the manpage etc.. If some particular expression was problematic, please let me know exact alternative.
