Because the recording tab doesn't even *appear* until a recording mixer is selected, you should either select all by default, or at least one of each mixer 'type' by default, or failing that, never hide any of the tabs; just show a message when the tab is clicked on along the lines of 'you haven't selected any Recording mixers to view; to select one, click Preferences'.
